In 1947, a top secret U.S. Air Force balloon crashed into a ranch in Roswell, New Mexico.
Nearly five decades later, battling the 1990s craze of UFO-mania, the U.S. Air Force released a 231-page report to separate fact from fiction.
The lengthy report touched on nearly everything the infamous incident spawned, from stories of alien bodies to government cover-ups.
In short, the report explained that the “flying saucer” was actually a high-altitude military surveillance balloon.
Intriguingly, the report was released July 24, 1997, a week before the incident’s 50th anniversary — a nice coincidence given one of the document’s final lines: “It is recommended that this document serve as the final Air Force report related to the Roswell matter.”
While the Roswell incident may have been nothing but stress and annoyance for the poor government officials who had to investigate the matter, the mass hysteria surrounding the UFO crash has been a win-win for everyone else, especially the city of Roswell which continues to profit from “Alien tourism.”
Arguably, no other far-fetched UFO story has stood the test of time, continuously churning the imagination of Hollywood, science fiction writers and dreamy sky-gazers alike.
