The minor earthquake detected by members of the public in the region surrounding Yellowstone National Park is part of an earthquake swarm that has been rocking the region for almost a week, according to scientists working in the area.

At this time, the researchers monitoring the volatile zone have no idea when the current earthquake swarm going to end. “These things could turn off in a heartbeat, or could last for months. Most go for a week or two, ” said Jamie Farrell, a professor of seismology at the University of Utah.

Yellowstone struck by an earthquake swarm

According to the researchers, the majority of the earthquakes that have been detected during this current swarm have been very small with only four being registered at a magnitude over three on the Richter scale. However, one of the earthquakes on Thursday night was significantly larger and measured in at 4.5 on the Richter scale which meant that people in the local area were aware of it. Thursday’s earthquake was the largest in the region since 2014 when the area was shaken by an earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale.

While it is understandable that the general public becomes concerned at the prospect of earthquakes in the Yellowstone National Park, the researchers claim that there is nothing to be worried about. According to Farrell, the national park experiences between 1500 and 2000 earthquakes every single year and around half of these occur during earthquake swarms. This means that the current activity should not be a cause for alarm, the researchers say.

Farrell explains that the current swarm can be attributed to expected stresses in the Earth’s crust owing to slight movements in the tectonic plates. But despite the commonplace nature of earthquakes and seismic activities at Yellowstone, the scientists are still keeping the earthquake swarm under very close observation to ensure that there is no volcanic activity in the enormous super-volcano located on the site which could be profoundly dangerous if it were ever to erupt.
