Mainstream media criticize Trump for ‘narcissistic’ speech – but they’re wrong.

Numerous media outlets, particularly those that consider themselves on the left wing of the political spectrum have showered the newly inaugurated President of the United States, Donald Trump, with criticism after they had claimed he struck an overwhelming narcissistic tone in his speech at the inauguration ceremony. But is it the case that Trump’s speech was dominated by egotism? Analysts suggest not.

Analysts who have closely examined President Trump’s inauguration speech have found that he made very few references to himself and did not make any directly self-aggrandising statements. In fact, they found that Trump only made three references to himself in two sentences in the entire speech.

It wasn’t until the halfway point of the speech that Trump mentioned himself for the first time. His exact words were; “The oath of office I take today is an oath of allegiance to all Americans.” His only other two references to himself as a person came shortly after that when he said; “I will fight for you with every breath in my body – and I will never, ever let you down.”

Overall, Trump’s speech struck a far more collectivist tone than an egocentric one. He mainly used his inauguration speech as a plea for collaboration across the country for the overall good of the nation. He mentioned the word ‘we’ about the American people forty-five times in the course of the speech and even this a central part of his closing rhetorical flourish. Trump said; “Together, We Will Make America Strong Again. We Will Make America Wealthy Again. We Will Make America Proud Again. We Will Make America Safe Again. And, Yes, Together, We Will Make America Great Again.”

This is in distinct contrast to the outgoing president Barrack Obama who made reference to himself a massive seventy-five times in his farewell speech to the nation. This is par for the course for Obama who made forty references to himself when addressing the Chicago Cubs at the White House and one hundred and thirty-seven references to himself while on the campaign trial for Hillary Clinton.

Perhaps the progressive media would be advised to focus their analysis on what Trump says as opposed to what they think their readership wants to hear.
