In a heartwarming story, a five-month-old boy found a liver minutes after being placed on the donor list. Melody McCabe, the boy’s mother thought the upsetting news was coming from the doctor. It was not bad news! He received a donor liver in 40 minutes. The boy needed a new liver due to liver disease. He needed treatment for biliary atresia. His bile ducts do not have normal openings, but the surgery did not work. His only hope was a new liver for Christmas. The family was happy for their son but felt the grief of the 30-year old man that died to donate the liver. Typically it takes months to receive an organ. Only 43 other people in the US have waited less than 40 minutes in five years. That is speedy.

The liver transplant was a success. The boy’s skin color tone was better. It will take time, but the boy should have full function with his new liver. The family is hoping the boy is out of the ICU by Christmas 2016. The other part of the donor’s liver went to another person.
