Is it Evil, is it Good, or is it just patriotism?

People love cruising Google Maps. Looking at exotic places, they’ve never been through a high definition bird’s eye view. Being able to see the Taj Mahal, Panjin Red Beach, or walk along the Great Wall of China is something few get to discover in person, but all can now experience through the world wide web and Maps.

On the topic of things to see in Asia, something interesting was discovered from a satellite image provided by Google Maps in the corner of Kazakhstan. The image is a giant five-pointed star with a circle it located on the southern shore of the Upper Tobol Reservoir. This area is a rather desolate place absent of human habitation. The First thing that comes to mind when seeing a giant pentagram engraved in the Earth is there must be something nefarious going on in Kazakhstan. Not necessarily. While the pentagram in our culture today is a sign of evil and Satanism, it was quite the different symbol long ago. The inverted pentagram, with two sides of the star pointing up, is what was declared as an evil symbol of magic in the 1800’s. Before this, the symbol has been given much different meaning from many different cultures and religions.

Looking at Asian history mainly ancient Chinese and Japanese religions, it symbolized the five elements of life. Christians believed it symbolized the five wounds of Jesus Christ. The meaning of the symbol has as many variations as humans have cultures. So does this giant pentagram symbolize Satanism or the elements of life? Or could it be something else entirely?

An archeologist from Karaganda State University by the name of Emma Usmanova has worked and researched the area for many years and has come up with an interesting albeit anticlimactic opinion as to why the symbol is there. She states the pentagram is not a pentagram but a star, and not just a star, but the Soviet Union star. The Soviet Union was founded in 1922 and eventually dissolved in 1991. During this time they placed stars on everything the USSR touched. She told LiveScience, “it is the outline of a park made in the form of a star.” That would explain it, but people still have their doubts and questions regarding this satellite image. Is it evil? Is it good? Is it the USSR? What is your opinion?
