A woman has been forced to change her surname on Facebook after receiving abuse from strangers when a UFO sighting was recently reported by someone using the same name as hers.

Gin Couzens said she had to change her name on social media sites after people began “harassing” her by contacting her about the sighting reported at Portreath by someone identified only as Miss Couzens. But Gin said although she has the same surname and lives in nearby Illogan, it had nothing to do with her.

The other ‘Miss Couzens’ had claimed she and her partner were left in shock after they spotted a UFO while out for a stroll on Portreath Beach. Although the incident had nothing to do with Gin, she said she soon began receiving messages from people calling her a “nut-job or a druggy (sic)”.

Gin wrote to Cornwall Live: “I didn’t know anything until my sister-in-law messaged me about this. I am being harassed, every five minutes, calling me a nut-job or a druggy.”

The amount of messages Gin said she received was so extreme that she has now been forced to change her last name on Facebook to stop people getting her confused with the UFO witness, although she does not rule out the possibility it was done using her name intentionally.

“Couzens is my name,” said Gin. “I am the only Couzens near Portreath that I am aware of. I changed my name on Facebook due to having loads of messages about this. I never reported anything or saw anything.”

A Miss Couzens had reported to the UK UFOs website that she and her partner were left so scared that they “ran hone and locked the doors”. This would make it appear more mistaken identity than intentional stitch-up due to the distance of a few miles between Portreath and Illogan.

But Gin said she now wanted to clear her name and stop people contacting her about a UFO she didn’t see or claim to have seen.

“I want to clear my name,” she said. “I did not report anything in this matter. I wouldn’t be so angry if I was lying. I never reported anything the information that was reported is false and it is not me. I’d gladly put these rumours to shame and a hoax.”
