Titan is the largest of the 53 moons of the planet Saturn. It is a fascinating moon because apart from planet Earth it is the only known object to show clear evidence of stable liquid on its surface. On October the 15th in 1997 the European Space Agency launched a spacecraft called Huygens, with the help of Nasa. In 2005 it finally landed on Titan. Thanks to an awesome new video just released by Nasa you can now see actual footage from the spacecraft’s point of view.
It feels amazing to watch that footage doesn’t it! Around the 30-second mark when you can see a land mass appearing thru the haze it feels epic, maybe the music helps even more, but it doesn’t feel incredible to watch it. When it finally hits the surface, the rocks are very Earth-like.
This landing was a very big deal, to do it successfully was one major achievement in the first place, it means it is the most distant spacecraft we have ever landed from the sun. Due to the efforts of NASA and the European Space Agency we now have great footage of this mysterious place and have seen up close, it’s sand dunes lakes of liquid methane.
Things like this are not only fascinating but further our understanding of the solar system in which we are just a tiny part. In September NASA’s probe that was part of the same mission, called Cassini, will bring its time to an end once it’s work is done studying Saturn. It will crash into Saturn’s thick atmosphere to signal the end. The picture that relatively small lump of metal sent from planet Earth and resting in pieces 1.2 billion kilometers away from us. What an epic journey it’s been on!
