The Northern Lights are on most people’s to-do list before they die. They are spectacular, but did you know about these beautiful lights above Canada?

Take a look at the fantastic photo showing the stunning pastel colored beams of magic.

The image was captured at 1: 30 a.m. In the area of northern Ontario on January the 6th 2017. Being so early in the morning imagine how many people missed this extraordinary event. Far from being a specialist photographer or anything, the guy who caught the sight, Timmy, used his smartphone. Imagine people in the past who witnessed this without the modern tech we have, their friends would never have believed them.

So what is causing these amazing pillars of light to not only appear, but shine brightly? It would be fun it if was aliens, but alas there is a scientific explanation which does make sense. NASA say the formation is due to ice from high altitudes. On cold nights the flat ice crystals that would normally be higher up come down closer to the ground. The color then comes from reflections, which unfortunately makes it slightly less magical. The light sources can be cars, buildings, or any other civilization. However, the plus side to this is that you may see different colored lights at different times which is fun.

Whenever this sort of formation occurs, it causes a spike in reports of UFOs. It apparently happens even more so around the Niagara Falls area due to the strength of them. It is funny people instantly presume they are UFOs rather than searching for a more realistic explanation. Although Niagara Falls is an amazing place so I’m sure aliens would want to visit there.

The light pillars don’t always last for too long, often you can be lucky if they are visible for an hour. This may be another reason why people think they are UFOs, because one minute they are here and the next they are gone. They do like like an incredible sight to witness, will you be putting the light ice pillars on your bucket list?
