Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research Lab researchers have talked about a machine that has learned to train dialog agents to be able to negotiate.
The researchers said that that the chatbots are in fact good at making deals. They said that they went back and tweaked one of the models as otherwise, the chatbot to chatbot conversation had led to diverging away from the language that humans speak with the agents having developed their own language, which they were using for negotiating. Instead, they had to turn to a fixed supervised model instead.
Chatbots Could Communicate In Language Not Human
This meant that the model that had allowed two chatbots to have a conversation and be able to use machine learning to iterate strategies for a conversation had led to the bots being able to communicate in a language that was not human. This fills people with wonder along with awe in regards to the future of machines and humans.
One of the biggest points highlighted in the report was that the chatbots are very good when it comes to negotiating and the researchers went on to say that they can even use strategies such as pretending to be interested in something that really was of no value, so that it could be used later to reach a compromise by conceding it. The details about the non-human language, according to one tech entrepreneur, are just a sign of what is to come in the future and it is mind-boggling.
The chatbots of Facebook are not said to be evidence of the arrival of a singularity and it is not even close to that. However, it was said that they demonstrate just how machines may be able to redefine the understanding of people of many realms that were once thought to only be human, such as language.
In regards to machine learning research, there is a great deal of guesswork already and this often involves having to feed a neural net of a lot of data and then taking a look at the output to try and work out just how a human being thinks. How machines are able to come up with non-human ways of talking is a reminder that is astonishing about how little scientists really know, even those who are actually designing the systems themselves.
The Facebook researchers said that they had written in their paper that there is still much more potential for work in the future and more so in regards to exploring reasoning strategies along with improving the diversity of utterances without diverging away from the human language.
