The country of Iceland is a small, remote land on the verge of the Arctic Circle in the upper regions of the Atlantic Ocean. It has a relatively small population that are mainly the descendants of the Vikings that had visited that country centuries ago. During the Vikings’ colonization of Iceland around the ninth century, there was what seemed to be a “highway” that ran through the Icelandic highlands, and they ran all the way from the northern part of the island country down to the southern region of the mainland.

During the tumultuous time in which various tribes frequented the tiny island nation, this highway served as an important route that served many purposes. It would act as a transport route so that troops could launch an attack against the potential invaders that would threaten the island. It would also serve as a passageway so that negotiations could take place between various tribes.

This highway served as a very important feature for the people of Iceland and has provided numerous historical events in addition to what the Vikings had used it for. For instance, around the 1700s, this highway was used to transport herds of sheep as evidenced from a herd and their shepherd that were found as they froze to death during a snowstorm. Perhaps this trail also served as a vital trade route for people of the island.

The significance of this trail is simply astounding as it is the focal point of the country of Iceland and it has been for numerous centuries. People still travel there to study the importance of this path and the various historical implications that it served for the tiny island nation. Perhaps this served as the forerunner with regards to the beginnings of civilization as the Vikings would go on to colonize much of the new world. Iceland could have served as a test subject for what the Vikings had in store as they expanded to much of North America in later centuries.
