When we think of this continent of Antartica, we automatically think frozen wasteland. But what if it wasn’t always like that? What if at one time Antarctica was a tropical paradise, similar to say Hawaii. That may be something that sounds pretty unbelievable, but it turns out according to some research scientists this could very well have been the case. That millions of years ago Antarctica wasn’t covered with ice but quite a beautiful paradise.
Antarctica Not Always Frozen!
Scientists have determined that the frozen continent as we have come to know it millions of years ago, was free of ice. In fact, it seems as if from out of nowhere like over night the continent froze over. This strange occurrence according to some researchers occurred around 35 million years ago But why did this happen, why did the glaciers and polar ice caps form in this place. Some would say it had to do with Antarctica changing it’s location on the earth to the highest hemisphere. But some researchers have defunct this claim stating that even after this had happened that Antarctica remained the tropical paradise.
So, over the years many experts debated why the sudden climate change occurred. One group of scientists spent ten years coming up with the reason and perhaps point their findings to what had been known on the earth as the ice age.
Previous evidence points paradoxically to a stable climate at the same time this event, one of the biggest climate events in Earth’s history, was happening, ” says Matthew Huber, assistant professor of earth and atmospheric sciences at Purdue University. “Our studies show that just over thirty-five million years ago, ‘poof, ’ there was an ice sheet where there had been subtropical temperatures before, ”
So, in other words as the rest of the earth started to melt down after this period due in part mostly to the large ice sheet that formed in that continent at that time Antarctica didn’t. Perhaps this had to do with the current location, which is far from the rotation of the sun. The irony is over the years there are those who have disputed that perhaps the ice age never happened, but now there seems to be evidence to the fact that this was indeed a period on the earth.
