Donald Trump’s mindset is that of a toddler; if someone disagrees with him or offers constructive feedback, then that person is reduced to being disliked by Trump. Not even the Pope has been immune from this asinine mindset that Donald Trump holds. When news of Trump’s plans to build a border wall to stop undocumented individuals from coming into the U.S., the Pope said Trump’s plans were “not Christian.”

Instead of engaging in a diplomatic, mature, and professional conversation with the Pope (like an adult), Trump blasted the Pontiff and reduced his opinion about the border wall to being “disgraceful.” Ironically, prior to the Pope’s honest and tactful remarks about Trump’s wall, Trump was highly complimentary about him. Moreover, when Trump met him in-person and had the opportunity to say to his face what he’d been saying via Twitter and interviews, Trump was a coward.

It’s Trump’s propensity to have keyboard courage, hide behind interviews, and incite hate that is likely the reason that those closest to the Pope remain extremely critical of Trump and people who enable his divisive and sometimes discriminatory politics. In fact, two people close to Pope Francis are so disgusted with Trump and his supporters, especially those who claim religious values as their reason for voting for him, that they wrote about them in the La Civiltà Cattolica.

The publication is reviewed by the Vatican, so the article entitled, Evangelical Fundamentalism and Catholic Integralism in the USA ( http://www.laciviltacattolica.it/articolo/evangelical-fundamentalism-and-catholic-integralism-in-the-usa-a-surprising-ecumenism/ ): A surprising ecumenism, makes a strong statement on behalf of the Catholic church. Written by Father Antonio Spadaro and Pastor Marcelo Figueroa, the piece calls Trump supporters “value voters,” and levies harsh criticism against them for encouraging the influence of religion on what the writers refer to as a “nostalgic dream of a theocratic type of state.”

Racist, misogynistic, homophobic, xenophobic…

Spadaro and Figueroa also argue that American evangelicals and Catholics have gotten to the point where they’re a “community of combatants” who are looking to create a “xenophobic and Islamophobic vision that wants walls and purifying deportations.” Holding nothing back, the authors don’t stop there, they also say that American conservative Catholics are only on one accord because of issues that demonize others, like same-gender marriage, religious education in schools, etc.

Apocalyptic geopolitics

In perhaps the most damning words of the piece, the authors say Trump confidant and staffer Steve Bannon supports “an apocalyptic geopolitics” that’s based on a false narrative of the Bible, a notion “that is no different from the one that inspires Islamic fundamentalism.”

The full article outlines other ways in which Trump’s hateful rhetoric is no different than that of extremist groups, and may be found here.
