It was brave of Robert Bolman to write a pro-UFO letter (“Easy explanation: UFOs are real,” May 14). Even though UFOs and the alien probe meme is embedded in popular culture, the idea of taking the issue of UFOs seriously is still considered frivolous. Anyone in a professional field risks their credibility by speaking about one’s experiences, or by offering pro-UFO views.
I’ve been researching, interviewing witnesses and writing about UFOs and related fields for more than 20 years. I assure you that there is much more to the phenomena than a simplistic “it’s aliens/no it ain’t” dichotomy.
I’m not debating the existence of non-human entities; that’s for elsewhere. But questions and issues still arise concerning the “UFOs are just our stuff” belief.
What are “our” UFOs/craft doing? Example: a mottled brownish revolving (while stationary) sphere seen above an apartment complex in Eugene. I viewed this on the video, taken by the witnesses. Slowing down the tape, we could see that the object was still there, but somehow cloaked.
After a few moments, a mist of something was expelled from underneath this object. This is just one of hundreds of similar sightings.
This was no doubt a human-made object. But what was its purpose? What was in that mist; something mundane, like a weather-monitoring substance, or something more insidious? Why the cloaking?
Important questions like these deserve answers. Asking them doesn’t make one a kook. Nor does it negate the concurrent existence of something far more profound.
