The constellation of Auriga (the charioteer) has been identified as the best location for astronomy enthusiasts who have aspirations of catching a mysterious fast radio burst (FRB). According to reports, 17 FRBs have been detected there.
Fast Radio Bursts Have Been Detected From Auriga
The detected FRB known as FRB 121102 is the only repeating FRB that was found this year. All of the FRBs are from the same source which is a rare phenomenon and one that has created ripples of excitement around the astronomy word.
FRBS are quick flash radio waves which produce tremendous amount of energy within a fraction of a second. Unlike another phenomenon in science textbooks, FRBs were only discovered in 2011. Since then a lot of research has gone into finding the causes and many astronomers have put forward different explanations including some that suggested that it may be outputted from alien communication systems.
Due to its intensity, scientists had suggested that FRB’s origin must be outside the Milky Way galaxy and was just a one off event that may have been caused by the collision of stars. The FRB 121102 has now dispelled this theory.
According to the Astrophysical Journal, the discovery of the FRB 121102 which displayed repeating outburst pattern cannot be cataclysmic. They added that the discovery of the FRB 121102 would be important to understanding the workings of radio transients. For now, the source is believed to be a young neuron star located in a supernova remnant or a star forming region.
Further analysis is yet to be conducted on the source of the latest FRB. Hence, the distance is unknown and so is the Galaxy were the source is embedded. There aren’t a lot of sources of FRBs-there are less than 20, so this strange to everyone.
Scientists estimates there are 10,000 FRBs emitted in the sky every day from every direction.
