The search for the secret to true happiness is being searched for and the discovery of a 66-year-old Tibetan monk with the name of Matthieu Ricard has now taken them one step closer.

66 Year Old Tibetan Monk May Be Happiest Man On Earth

It is believed that Ricard may just be the happiest man on Earth. Ricard is both a Tibetan monk and a geneticist. Studies undertaken recently have revealed that he is able to produce brain activity at a level that is linked to learning, attention, memory, and consciousness that neuroscientists have never seen before.

Matthieu Ricard says that the secret behind why he is so happy is that he meditates. He said that meditation is very much like lifting weights, it is an exercise for the mind and anyone has the ability to become happy simply by training their brain.

Monk Had 256 Sensors Attached To Skull To Monitor Brain Activity

256 sensors were attached to the skull of Ricard at the University of Wisconsin and they monitored the activity of his brain when he meditated. The help the scientists get a better understanding they also managed to study other monk’s brain activity during the study.

The study revealed that those who practiced meditation over a long period of time, more than 50,000 rounds of meditation, had shown a big change in their brain function. People who practiced less often did not see as big a difference. Some of the monks that were studied in the test only did three weeks of meditation for 20 minutes per session and they still showed a change that was noticeable.

The gamma waves in the brain of Ricard was way off the charts and scientists found that he had a higher level of activity in the prefrontal cortex of his brain in comparison to that of the right. The discovery meant that Ricard had a capacity for happiness that was bigger, along with a reduction in negativity.

Transcendental Meditation Could Bring World Peace

Transcendental meditation is a type of mediation that involved repeating a silent mantra. It is also called the Transcendental Meditation technique. Those who practice it repeat a sound or mantra and it is said to be most beneficial when practiced for around 15 to 20 minutes each day twice per day. It is said to be one of the most effective ways of lowering levels of stress, promoting relaxation and for use in self-development.

There has been a lot of discussions about whether this types of meditation is religious or nor. It is not connected only with an outside form of religion but the United States Court of Appeals did uphold a federal ruling saying that Transcendental Meditation was, in fact, a religion and that it could not be included in a lesson in public schools.

One of the advocates for Transcendental Meditation is the filmmaker David Lynch. He said that it can bring peace to the world and he has gone on to launch the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and Peace to channel his passion into helping other people.
