Fourteen-year-old boy comes across major World War Two find.
Daniel Kristiansen, a fourteen-year-old boy taking a Second World War history class, is sure to be getting top marks after his studies led him to recover the remains of a German Messerschmitt plane along with its pilot in one of the fields of his family’s farm.
The boy’s father, Mr. Kristiansen, said that when his son told him that he was studying the Second World War, he jokingly suggested that they should go out and look for a crashed plane in their field. When he was a child, his grandfather had told him that a Nazi plane had crash landed in the field in 1944.
However, he was not sure if he could trust his grandfather’s word. Apparently, he told a lot of stories – some of them true, some of them not so true. He also assumed that if there had been a plane crash that the authorities would have removed the wreckage long ago.
As they dug deeper, they also uncovered personal items from the pilot
Despite all that, Daniel was intrigued by the story and convinced his father to help him search for the wreckage using a metal detector. Sure enough, after scouting the field, the father and son duo heard the metal detector start to beep. They began digging the plot using an excavator borrowed from a neighbor and shortly, they realized that they had discovered something of immense historical importance.
“In the first moment it was not a plane, “Mr. Kristiansen said to reporters, “it was maybe 2,000 – 5,000 pieces of a plane. And we found a motor. Then suddenly we found parts of bones and parts from [the pilot’s] clothes.” As they dug deeper, they also uncovered personal items from the pilot, a destroyed book which they presumed to be either a Bible or Mein Kampf, several notebooks and a wallet containing money. They carefully handled these objects and placed them in bags for preservation.
After their find, the ordinarily quiet family farm became the host of a flurry of frantic activity. Historians attended the site where they collected the recovered objects which they think could be of major historical significance. The police also performed a routine investigation to confirm the crash site, and specialists attended the scene to remove the ammunition safely. The body of the German pilot was recovered by forensics specialists. They hope that they will be able to identify him in conjunction with German authorities so that he can be repatriated to his home country so that he can be properly laid to rest.
