Dennis Rodman, the controversial basketball player from the US is making a return visit to North Korea and he is traveling as a private citizen.

On route to North Korea, the basketball player said that he was just trying to open up doors. Rodman caused a lot of controversies when he made friends with Kim Jong-Un, the leader of North Korea on a previous trip Rodman made to Pyongyang in 2013 and 2014. At that time Rodman had called Jong-Un a friend for life.

The US state department had said that they were well aware of the visit of Rodman to North Korea and said that they wished him well. They also said that they had issued travel warnings to citizens of the US and had made the recommendation that they should not travel to North Korea. Thomas Shannon, the US Under-Secretary of State said that this was for the safety of citizens.

Rodman had talked to reporters and he said that the whole purpose of him going to North Korea was to find out if he could bring sports to the country. It was not made clear as to whether he would bring up the issue of detention of US citizens in North Korea.

Tensions in North Korea and the US have been intensifying since Donald Trump has become president. The president had said that in the right circumstances he would be honored to meet with Mr. Kim.

Rodman spoke to reporters on Tuesday at the airport, and he said that he was sure that Trump was happy about what he was trying to accomplish during his visit to North Korea. Trump had been asked about what he thought of the visit of Rodman to North Korea in 2013, and he said that when you look at the world, it is blowing up around us, and said that perhaps Dennis is better than what we have.

Rodman had been one of the contestants to star on the reality TV show of Mr. Trump, The Celebrity Apprentice in the same year. In 2014 Mr. Trump dismissed any rumors that the two of them might head over to North Korea together.

Rodman had in the past encouraged President Barack Obama to call Mr. Kim and said that both of the leaders enjoyed basketball. In the press, in the US his trips had been called basketball diplomacy. In 2014 Rodman had told a magazine that he had been to the government and offered his support but that it had been rejected.

During TV interviews he had broken down talking about death threats he had received about the trips he made, which had been condemned by human rights activists.

Rodman said that he had sent a Tweet to Mr. Kim asking if he would do him a favor and let Kenneth Bae go free, he was talking about the US-Korean missionary who had served two years in jail for trying to overthrow the government. Mr. Bae would, later on, thank Rodman for trying to raise public awareness.

Rodman said that this last trip to North Korea had been sponsored by a company providing digital currency for the cannabis industry. When Rodman had gone to the airport he had worn clothing that was fully branded of the sponsor. A prior trip had been sponsored by a betting company.
