The Drudge Report is reporting that it is the latest independent media outlet to come under cyber-attack in recent days. The site’s founder, Matt Drudge, has reported on Twitter that the website came under a DDoS attack which overwhelmed the website’s servers with traffic in an attempt to force the page offline. Drudge is one of several individuals alleging that the United States government were behind the attack. Writing on Twitter, Drudge said; “Is the US government attacking DRUDGE REPORT? Biggest DDoS since site’s inception. VERY suspicious routing [and timing].”
Did the US government attack the Drudge Report?
It is believed that this cyber-attack may be tied to a recent White House announcement that the government intended to take retaliatory measures against the Russian government for hacking Democratic Party members’ emails in a bid to influence and derail the recent presidential election. The government suggests that these measures would involve the expulsion of 35 Russian intelligence operatives from the United States who it is believed have been involved in hacking during the presidential election.
Shortly after the announcement, various media outlets were said to have come under mysterious attacks. Russia Today, the international television news network which is funded by the Russian government suddenly became unavailable to view in certain areas of the country. According to Mikael Thalen, this temporary blackout experienced by Russia Today seemed to be linked to the attack on the Drudge Report. Many individuals are now voicing their opinion on social media platforms that the government targeted these particular outlets because they are linked to propaganda and ‘fake’ reports that are said to have originated from the Kremlin.
However, some people are suggesting that the temporary blackout of Russia Today and the attack on the Drudge Report may well have just been a coincidence as the television station only went offline in a few areas in the country. Many social media reporters have said that their access to the station went on interrupted. However, if this is a coincidence, it is certainly a very extraordinary coincidence indeed.
These latest attacks on media outlets come shortly after one of Donald Trump’s biggest supporters, Alex Jones, reported that his site Infowars had come under a DDoS attack similar to that described by employees of the Drudge Report.
This story will be updated as more news becomes available.
