Mount Etna made headlines all over the world recently after it powerfully erupted after a relatively long period of dormancy. However, Mount Etna is not the only volcano that has sprung into action after a spell of inactivity in the past few years. Experts suggest that four volcanoes in Iceland will erupt in the very near future and a volcano in India which has been dormant for 150 years will shortly erupt.
Similar reports are being fed back to seismologists concerning volcanoes in both Guatemala and Indonesia. The geographic variety of these suddenly active volcanoes suggests that there is something brewing within the core of the Earth itself. So what could be causing the problem?
A wave of increased volcanic activity suggests a serious disruption in the Earth’s core
While it is not possible at this time to explain the volatile activity in the Earth’s core to any one particular cause, it is believed that this unusual trend is linked to the environment. While climate changes have been known to cause volcanic eruptions in the past, it is not believed that the current wave of global warming has influenced the Earth’s core yet. In the past when climate change has affected the seismic activity of the Earth there has been a considerable lag between the changes in the environment and the increased volcanic activity. This period can be as long as a thousand years.
However, this does not mean that heavy industry is completely blameless in the recent wave of seismic disruption. It is possible that the upsurge in mining in deep portions of the Earth as well as fracking activity could be disrupting the natural positioning of the tectonic plates sufficiently enough to cause volcanic eruptions and earthquakes all over the planet.
Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are notoriously difficult to manage effectively and can prove disastrous for settlements in the nearby vicinity. This is particularly the case when it comes to super volcanoes such as Campi Flegrei and the Yellowstone Caldera. The eruption of either of these super volcanoes could prove to be disastrous. However, as heavy industry shows no sign of being willing to slow down in its exploitation of the natural resources of this planet, it is possible that a catastrophe is on the horizon.
