The European Space Agency have made no secret of their long-term to colonize the moon. Today, they have announced that their settlement on the moon will not only include the essential facilities for sustaining a life and a basic community but will also feature a temple which will apparently represent the new way of life offered by the lunar settlement.
The ESA plan to build a temple on the Moon
Jorge Mañes Rubio is a key member of the Advanced Concepts Team (ACT) think tank that is involved in advising the ESA on new and future technological advancements that will help them achieve their stated aims. Part of the work of the think tank involves thinking far into the future about how human beings will cope living away from Earth. According to Rubio, the think tank has to consider what kind of social interactions these people will have, what kind of cultural activities and rituals they will take part in and what kind of art they will produce in order to ensure that their creations will meet the needs of the future space travelers. For Rubio, the lunar settlement represents a perfect chance to start from scratch. He suggests that the people who move to the moon for the first time will have no established social conventions, nationalities or religions. This will mean that these concepts will have to be reinvented. This is why he believes that it is essential to make a temple a part of the lunar settlement. “This Temple is intended as a mythic and universal structure that can hopefully bring people together in this new environment in novel ways, ” he said.
At this point in time, the ESA believe that their lunar settlement will lie on the Shackleton Crater at the Moon’s South Pole. The rim of the Shackleton Crater is almost always in sunlight whereas the inside of the Moon is in constant shadow. This means that the colonists will have an area of nearly constant warmth and an area of ice formation which will provide water and fuel within easy reach.
Rubio plans for the temple to lie underneath the rim of the Shackleton Crater within a 50-meter dome. The dome will have openings facing the Earth so that the colonists can see their home planet whenever they chose. There will also be a telescope fitted into the floor of the temple so that the visitors can use it as a place to stare into the rest of space.
