This is not my story, but my mother and grandfather's and a couple other members of my family present at the time. This happened before I was born.
Growing up, I was extremely interested in UFOs and extraterrestrials. I was always reading books and magazines, watching everything I could find on TV and from VHS rentals from the local library. I didn't really try to hide my interest from my family, but I wasn't very vocal about it either.
I can't remember exactly what triggered my mother to tell me this story, but it was around the time The X-Files was getting rather popular so I'd assume it was something she saw on the show that made her remember it.
My mother was an only child and lived with my grandparents in rural Mississippi at the time. She was 16 and had a friend over for the night. My grandfather's uncle was also over for a visit, as he just lived a few miles down the road. My mother and her friend had decided to eat supper in her room while listening to a new album her friend had received from her parents as a gift for her birthday. Her great uncle had taken his plate outside on the front porch to eat while mom and dad ate while watching TV.
My mother was the first to finish, so she took her plate to the kitchen to clean it and put it away. She tells me that when she looked up finally after washing her dishes, she sees a large, orange glowing sphere floating a few feet over the pond in the pasture. Now the pond is about 100 yards from the kitchen window, so she can see it fairly well. There are no trees between the pond and house. She said it caught her by such a surprise she screamed and dropped her plate. My grandfather jumped up and asked what was wrong, she told him it looked like there was a fire out at the pond. He looks out the window and noticed it wasn't acting like fire at all and he could see plainly that it was over the water, not on the opposite side on the bank.
He goes outside and his uncle is sitting there watching it and says he's been watching it for 20 min or more. He said it wasn't there one minute and he looked down to take a bite of food and when he looked back, there it was. My grandfather and his uncle both start towards the pond to try and figure out what the object was. About halfway there, the sphere quickly moves toward the road and crosses it into the woods across the road from their house and starts slowly following the road away.
My grandfather ran to his truck and took off after it. He said no matter how fast he went, the object stayed to his left about 100 yards or more out in the woods. He knew a road was coming up on the left so he took it to try and catch up to the UFO. He told me as soon as he turned onto the road the object came out of the woods in front of him. His engine died, and nothing in the truck would work. It was dead. He said the object just sat there about 10 seconds, then shot straight up. He said it was the fastest he'd ever seen anything move. Like a bullet being shot from a rifle. It continued going up until it was out of sight. After about 5 minutes he was able to crank up and drive back home.
My mom started the story and then I had to go to my grandfather to hear his part. My grandmother and my grandfather's uncle both say this happened. To add to this, a few years later they all moved to Georgia and on the way through Alabama, for about 150 miles, he claims an orange sphere like the one they saw at the pond paced them on the interstate, about 100 yards or so into the woods.
I don't know if this story is true or not. I'd like to think it is, as they really weren't into the whole "UFO" thing and didn't really have a reason to make it up.
I'm sorry if this is a bad read, I know I'm rather terrible at writing. My grandfather died a few years ago and I just felt like I needed to tell you guys the story he told me.
