Virginia police say multiple people have been injured after a gunman opened fire on Congressional Republicans during early morning baseball practice in the Del Ray neighbourhood of Alexandria.

Republican House whip Steve Scalise was among those shot by the human, who opened fire with an automatic weapon.

Another congressman, Republican Mo Brooks told how he and the other member of the House of Representatives were getting in practice for a game tomorrow night when shots broke out.

“I was out there waiting to get ready when I heard shots,” Mr Brooks told CNN. “Then I heard Steve Scalise at 2nd Base. He screams. There is a semi-automatic”

Mr Brooks said he was able to scramble over to Mr Scalise who had been shot in the leg. Mr Brooks said as Mr Scalise dragged himself towards the dug out to seek cover, he took off his belt and was able to use it as a tourniquet for a member of the congressional staff, who had also been shot

The congressman said that another of his colleagues, Ron Desantis, was standing at 3rd Base and had not yet come in to bat. “He was due to bat. But that probably saved his life. He had come in he might have been the first to get shot,” he said.

Asked if it was a deliberate attack on Republican politicians, he said: “People know who we are. It’s not a secret that we’re practicising here….He was going after elected officials.”

The attack took place at around 6.15am. Reports suggest a total of five people were shot. There have been no reports of fatalities. Mr Scalise is said to be in a stable condition, according to Fox News.
