An Uber driver rescued a 16-year-old girl from a sex trafficking ring after he recognized warning signs and took appropriate action.
The Uber driver known as Keith Avila picked up three women in Elk Grove, California in the hours of Monday. Avila noticed that one of the passengers was significantly younger than the two other women and was dressed in strangely. He did nothing until a conversation between one of the women and the young girls raised the red flag.
According to Elk Grove’s Information Officer Chris Trim, the police apprehended Destiny Pettway and Maria Westley aged 25 and 31 respectively when they arrived at the scene of the incident. Police say they found the victim Disney Vang in a hotel room. Vang was also arrested but has since been released and sent to stay in an alternative housing situation until they can reach her parents or guardians.
Westley and Pettaway were charged with pandering and pimping. Their bail was set to $500,000.
Avila said one of the women was instructing the girl to hug the client and then ask for the donation before she starts touching him. He dropped off the passengers at Holiday Inn Express in Elk Grove before contacting the police.
Avila who has been an Uber driver for less than a month said the worst thing he imagined would happen on the job was dealing with drunk passengers who sometime puke in the car. He said he just acted in this scenario and didn’t pause to think whether or not he should get involved.
