Today the world lost another hero: Brian J. Masterson has passed away from esophageal cancer. Brian was best known by the public for being an FDNY Firefighter and 9/11 first responder. He was age 61.
He is survived by his wife Mary and three children, along with multiple grandchildren and relatives.
Brian, along with his fellow first responders from the now named Marine 9, Fireboat II (or Engine 93 Ladder 45 Battalion 13 in Washington Heights as it was known during 9/11), tirelessly worked day and night during the aftermath of the attacks in an effort to find survivors and remains of the victims still trapped inside the rubble at ground zero. As a direct result of this many firefighters have lost their lives due to the inhalation of carcinogens that were aerosolized from the fallout of the 3 buildings; 124 as of late January 2017.

And yet even with the fact that the death count related to 9/11 is still rising and new evidence showing close ties between Mohammed Atta and the Saudi Government, the United States government is still stoic in it’s response to these unnecessary deaths. Families of first responders lose their loved ones each day and no official support has been given to first responders or their families. Bills proposing any support are still being shut down in Washington despite such tragic losses still occurring.
Will the US government remain resistant to helping the people who cleaned up their mess? Sadly it seems that only time will tell. For now the first responders and their families are stuck without knowing whether there will ever be a proper “thank you” from the powers that be. All they can do is hope for the best and rely on private advocacy groups to help them in their time of need.
The Masterson family has asked that any donations for medical bills and funeral arrangements you send them to either the FDNY Fire Family Transport Foundation, Ltd, (P.O.
