A bridge that has collapsed in Ecuador has left over 30 people injured and in the hospital. The suspension bridge collapsed and sent dozens of people crashing into the water of the river.

Spectators Crowded Onto The Bridge Watching Rafts On River

The horrifying incident has been caught on camera, and it took place over the Carrizal River close to the city of Tosagua. Spectators had been crowding onto the bridge watching rafts sail past during a local festival.

Juan Velasquez, from the fire department in the city, revealed that the bridge had collapsed due to the fact that too many people had gone onto it and it had been unable to support the weight of the spectators.

The incident had been captured by people attending the festival who were crowded along the river banks watching the event. It was said that people were heard screaming and shouting in horror when the bridge collapsed from under their feet. Among the people were children and shouts of despair could be heard as they toppled over off the bridge.

The footage revealed people dashing to the river to give help to the victims that were stricken by the collapse of the bridge. The emergency services had been called, and many people had already made their way to the local hospital.

Many Children Fell Into The River When Bridge Collapsed

One person involved in the incident said that everything had happened very fast and that they had fallen into the river, but they had managed to get out and leave straight away. They went on to say that children were being taken out of the water and it was a very desperate situation that people had not been expecting.

Reports have suggested that as many as 36 people had suffered from an injury in the incident. However, it has been reported that there have not been any serious injuries and many of the people who were transferred to the hospital have now been discharged.

A resident of the area said that the bridge over the river had been built about ten years ago and since that time it had not had any maintenance. It was said that the bridge had a maximum capacity of 1.5 tons at any time.
