It can be a very difficult line to negotiate. How does an individual in a contemporary, industrialized society undermine the elite and free themselves from the nexus of control without risking their livelihood, their freedom or even their lives? There are a few basic steps a person can take to restore the power over their lives into their hands and they all begin with the mind.

Firstly, citizens should accept nothing at face value that comes from the mainstream media, lawmakers and politicians, the military and large corporations. Each of these powerful and influential institutions has proven themselves time and time again to be corrupt, venal and deceitful. On a fairly regularly basis, they have also been shown to be actively working against the public’s best interest. Given that they have done nothing substantial to earn the trust of the general public they should always be considered to be acting immorally unless they can prove otherwise. People have nothing to lose by consistently shining scrutiny on these powerful forces and demanding that they are held accountable.

It may appear trivial but popular culture must also be subject to rigorous scrutiny too. Since the dawn of time, culture has been part of the matrix of control exercised by the political elite to distract people from what is going on. In today’s capitalist world, culture serves a dual purpose of keeping the masses placated and ensures that they continually by into the consumerist culture that is the foundation upon which the elite maintain their power and control. While it may seem like harmless fun, it is one of the primary weapons the elite use to maintain a docile populace.

Once an individual has freed themselves from their guileless and their distractions they may focus their attentions and energies on sources outside of the mainstream. For instance, it would be by a folly to invest any attention in either of the two main political parties in the United States, or indeed any of their counter-parts across the developed world. Instead, one might like to invest their time and energy in pursuing political action in a different way outside of the boundaries of the conventional political structure. In addition to this, it may be profitable to disengage from mainstream media narratives of what is happening in the world and instead devote one’s attention to alternative news sources.

Most importantly, it is essential that individuals resist anything that makes them uncomfortable or which may cause them to forfeit elements of their individual freedom. The range of institutions one might choose to disengage with are vast encompassing the health care system, the police, the armed services and even large food companies.
