It is a common gripe for people living in the built-up modern urban areas that their lives do not include enough green space.

Gardens are considered something of a luxury in the world’s biggest industrialized cities and many green thumbs are going to waste in the urban areas. Now, an innovative company named Space10 believes that it has the answer to this problem.

Space10 is a Denmark design lab which is supported by the Swedish furniture giant, IKEA. The company has recently announced that they plan to open source one of their new designs – the remarkable Growroom. The Growroom is intended to be an indoor garden that will add a splash of green and nature to otherwise gray urban dwellings throughout the world.

Danish company creates new indoor gardens for city dwellers

The company describes their design as “an artistic exploration of the incredible potential of urban farming.” The creators of the Growroom imagine that their product could be used as a form of natural shelter for people living in the urban centers who want to commune with nature from the comfort of their own homes. In addition to that, the Growroom also offers several practical benefits to its owners. The pavilion shaped design is structured in such a way as to allow the optimum circulation of water and light to allow for plants to grow to their full potential. This means that those who choose to take Space10 up on their offer to create their own Growroom could harvest a week’s worth of herbs and vegetables at a time from their indoor natural sanctuary.

Given the fact that Space10 is affiliated with IKEA, it should come as no surprise that the Growroom does require a little bit of DIY savvy. The initial pavilion structure is assembled using nothing more than sheets of plywood and simple screws. The building instructions, which are available on the internet and are completely free of charge, are reportedly simple enough for DIY fanatics to get on with creating their own natural indoor space as soon as they like.

According to Space10, The Growroom is “an urban farm pavilion that looks into how cities can feed themselves… The original version of The Growroom sparked interest and people requested to either buy or exhibit [it]… But it doesn’t make sense to promote local food production and then start shipping it across oceans and continents. That is why we now release The Growroom as open source design and encourage people to build their own.”
