Bob’s Side Show at The Antique Man Ltd. In Baltimore, Maryland is a number of a huge number of oddities, most of which date back to the nineteenth century. The nineteenth century was considered to be a ‘fast age’ of sensation and curiosity and budding entrepreneurs would go to any lengths to satisfy their customers love for novelty.
This led to the practice of rogue taxidermy and the creation of ‘gaffs’ which were created by piecing together the corpses of various animals to create supposed examples of mythological beasts such as dragons, unicorns, and giants. One of the gaffs at Bob’s Side Show stands out from the crowd – the mummified body of a two-headed giant. But could it be possible that this particular specimen is actually real?
Two headed giant displayed in side show could be real
Some people believe that the extraordinary two-headed giant, referred to Kap Dwa, might have been a set of conjoined twins sharing one body standing at a mighty twelve feet tall. The sheer height of this individual makes it appear unlikely that he was a real person. Robert Wadlow is generally considered to have been the tallest man who has ever lived and reached eight foot and eleven inches in height. However, experts have conceded that it is theoretically possible that a man could grow to twelve feet in height.
Interestingly, stories of giants were rampant in the seventeenth century, when it is alleged that Kap Dwa lived. For instance, the Dutch captain Sebalt de Weert claimed that he had his crew had witnessed several giants while passing through the Magellan Strait. The Vatican also houses documents attesting to giants in South America which were apparently slain by the native Aztecs.
This suggests that it is possible that such a person as Kap Dwa could have existed. Furthermore, those who have examined the giant have claimed that there are no seams or stitches that would indicate that the specimen was the result of rogue taxidermy.
So could he be real? There are some individuals who certainly seem to think so, and there are various conflicting stories which suggest that he was a real life person. The original story was that Kap Dwa was captured in the late seventeenth century by Spanish sailors who imprisoned him in their ship where he was treated very cruelly. He made a bid to escape, but in the melee, he was killed by one of the sailors who thrust a pike through his chest.
However, Robert Gerber, the owner of Bob’s Side Show, tells a completely different story. Gerber says that the body of the giant was found on a beach with a spear protruding from his chest. His body was recovered and mummified, and he became a deified figure for some of the local people in Paraguay.
The truth may never be uncovered about the origin of this elusive and impressive two-headed giant.
