General James Mattis, Secretary of Defense

The new United States Secretary of Defense under President Trump seems to have a good head on his shoulders. He is a military veteran and was given the nickname “Mad Dog” from the press. The biggest thing that came out of the conference with Matis is that he would like to lead respectively.

The world order is “under biggest attacks since WW2, from Russia, terrorist groups, and China’s actions in the South China Sea,” Mattis told McCain, agreeing with the bellicose senator that Russia is trying to break up NATO.

“I’m all for engagement” with Russia, “but we also have to recognize the reality of what Russia is up to,” Mattis told Senator Jack Reed (D-Rhode Island).

He stated the America has two powers. The first is the power of intimidation. Not all of America’s power comes from the military, though, he said. America also has the power to influence through inspiration instead of fear. He also claims that he fears the last tactic has not been used too much within the last twenty years.

He claimed that he is not against grouping up with Russian to help solve some of the world issues, but that America needs to be wary of Russia and what they are up to. He claims there is no reason to trust blindly in any national situation.

He had a surprisingly neutral response when asked about his thought on gender and orientation when it came to the military. He said that he has never cared about a person’s gender and that what two consenting adults do in their lives is also none of his business. As long as these people are steady and courageous soldiers who are willing and able to fight for this country’s freedom, they are welcome, according to the new Secretary of Defense.

When it comes to the military budget, he claims he will spend the money when it is supposed to be spent. He wants to use some of it to advance the military’s technology to keep the American military on par with the rest of the world. He also claimed that if he could not convince the others to keep certain things, then he would certainly cut them. This is in the true spirit of democracy.

He plans to lead in a way the first United States President did; power through peace.
