TL:DR; Made a film about a UFO believer, need help in getting the word out to the UFO community.
I asked one of the mods a couple of weeks ago for permission to post this and he said it was OK. No links or identifying info in this post, but please DM me if interested.
As the title says, I have made a full length narrative feature film about a UFO believer and I’m hoping the redditors in this community can help me with recommendations on who might be appropriate to contact to generate some interest and press. Ideally, I’d like to cultivate and develop a community that would support a story like this. And if you have interest in what I’ve created, then I’d be happy to DM with you and welcome any help or advice you may have. I do have trailers which I just put online and would be happy to send you a link.
My first conscious interest in UFOs was when, as a kid, I found a book about UFOs in my local library. It was a book I’d always look at with its black and white pictures and it certainly fed my imagination. I think the title was “Is there something out there?” My personal belief system about UFOs is that there is intelligent life out there in the universe, I’m just not convinced they are here yet. But who knows, they may be.
I’ve done a lot of diverse things in my life but I always have pursued my artistic ambitions and eventually ended up in Los Angeles. I have helped my friends with their projects and have helped produce some ultra low budget films, one of which got some nice recognition. But I knew that I had to at least try and make my own film.
I was inspired to write this story by a chance visit to a location with much UFO history. I was scouting locations for a short film that I was helping make when I came across Giant Rock near Landers, CA and the story of George van Tassel and the Integratron. Some of you may know the story and I won’t recap it all here. If you’ve ever been there, it is on BLM land in a dry lake bed in a valley between the Twentynine Palms Marine Base and the desolate city of Landers.
As it goes, George van Tassel had a UFO experience there in the 1950’s and soon promoted his location and eventually held UFO conventions. LIFE Magazine one year decided to cover the convention to show what a bunch of kooks they were but it had the opposite effect. The following year, nearly 10,000 people spent an entire weekend in Landers, listening to testimonials and spending time with other believers.
As I stood on that location in the high desert of the Mojave, I thought “What if?” What if after 10,000 people came to this location and believed, what if there was just one guy left? Based on that premise, I wrote a story about a guy who believes and keeps his vigil. But one night, a Mexican coyote guide walks into his campsite leading illegals across the desert. She returns the following week and as this tenuous relationship develops and they help each other, he must decide whether to keep believing in the aliens above he has never met or to pursue the mysterious guide that appears to him. There are more elements to this story but it is basically about a UFO believer and a Mexican coyote guide and what happens when these two worlds collide.
I shot this film several years ago and got stuck in post production. I was able to get unstuck and have almost, almost finished post production with the film. I believe I have a good story. My lead actress will be seen later this year in a 90 episode telenovela on Telemundo based on the story of Jenny Rivera. She plays the the sister of Jenny and is one of the leads so she will gain much visibility in those markets. In smaller roles, I have two character actors that have appeared in memorable roles in Terminator 2, Usual Suspects, and Big Lebowski. All the other actors are unknown and I’m very happy with their performances.
The production values are good. For you filmmaker geeks out there, I shot this on the Blackmagic Cinema Camera and Zeiss Prime lenses. There are a couple scenes that I wish I could do over but it doesn’t affect the overall story. Sound is good. There is an original score. I told the story that I set out to do.
I tried hard to create characters that were multidimensional and not stereotypes. In the movies, if you believe in UFOs, more often than not you’re crazy or made fun of. I was interested in someone that believes and what would happen if that faith is challenged and the consequences that could occur.
The film will have its world premiere at a small film festival in late April. It has been submitted to many other festivals, rejected by a bunch, and hopefully will get into a few others.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. I’d appreciate your help.
