The Japanese space agency JAXA has released an amazing new image of Venus that features an enormous wave in the planet’s atmosphere.

The photo comes from JAXA’s Akatsuki orbiter, which has been circling and observing Venus for the last year.

The giant 40-mile-long wave, believed to be the biggest ever seen in the solar system, did not sweep across the sky, however, it simply hung in the air over a mountainous region of the planet.

Astronomers theorize that it was spawned by surface winds colliding with the mountains to create the wondrous wave in Venus’ upper atmosphere.

The swirling winds of the planet’s foreboding atmosphere is a good indication of why Mars has emerged as the ideal destination for future exploration, since the Red Planet looks downright docile compared to Venus.
