According to NASA and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have claimed this week that 2016 was the hottest year on record. While weather fluctuations have been common throughout the history of the planet Earth, the last century has seen a phenomenal increase the temperatures across the globe. To demonstrate the remarkable change in the world’s temperatures in the past century, NASA has released a time-lapse video that spells out the scale of the catastrophe.
NASA’s terrifying video showing the rise of global warming
NASA based their video on weather records going back to 1880 when the technology to collect this kind of data was first invented. The records were supplemented by meticulously compiled data from over six thousand weather stations, buoy-based observations and the research stations in Antarctica.
The video shows that until the 1970s, the temperature of the planet Earth is fluctuating at a fairly even pace. However, from the beginning of the 1980s, the pattern starts to change and the world is shown to be gradually but consistently heating up right up until the present day. According to the video, in the past three years, the global average temperature has been increasing at a steady 1 degrees Celsius. “2016 is remarkably the third record year in a row in this series, “said Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies. “We don’t expect record years every year, but the ongoing long-term warming trend is clear.”
NASA’s visualization demonstrates that certain regions of the world have not experienced the same levels of consistent warming as others, owing to weather phenomena such as El Niño or La Niña. However, on a global scale, this video clearly demonstrates that the world is beginning to warm up at an alarming and accelerating rate which could have dire consequences for the entire planet if it continues to be left unchecked.
