Last week, President Barrack Obama expelled thirty-five Russian diplomats from the United States as part of a raft of punitive actions against the Kremlin for allegedly interfering with the democratic integrity of the United States during the recent presidential election.
STAY CALM AND CONSULT ALTERNATIVE NEWS SOURCES
While the president-elect Donald Trump has expressed his misgivings about the president’s actions and, indeed, his belief that the Russian state was responsible for the massive cyber-hack of the DNC emails, the mainstream media has tended to dismiss any skepticism about the claims out of hand. Now, legendary director Oliver Stone has strongly criticized the media for their attitude and has claimed that their ‘disgraceful’ ‘Cold-War style groupthink’ could lead to war with Russia.
In a lengthy post on Facebook, Stone urged the public to ‘stay calm’ and always consult alternative news sources about reports they might read in the mainstream media. He singled out the New York Times and the Washington Post as two of the worst offenders when it came to spreading misinformation to the public and said that they clearly had some agenda. His fear is that if alternate voices were blocked out that a single media groupthink could come to control the national conversation which could have potentially catastrophic results.
For his part, Stone said that he did not believe that the Russians had been responsible for the cyber-attack on the Democratic Party in order to benefit Donald Trump’s campaign. He claimed that he had proof that Democratic National Committee emails and the John Podesta emails had been leaked by a disgruntled individual from within the DNC offices.
He expressed his surprise that the mainstream media were ignoring this proof. He also expressed his shock at the way that the media were attacking President Putin as an individual. He said that this level of personal abuse was unprecedented and said; “The invective was aimed at the Soviet regime, but never were Khrushchev or Brezhnev the target of this bile.”
Stone, who has previously described the president-elect as a ‘charming madman’ said that he did not endorse Trump or his views but that he was glad that he wasn’t treading the same path as the rest of the political establishment when it came to attacking President Putin and the Russian Federation. “I never thought I’d find myself praying for the level-headedness of a Donald Trump…” he wrote, despairingly.
This is not the first time that the director has made his political views known to the wider public. Previously, he has called upon President Obama to pardon the NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden and has been a vocal supporter of the embattled Wikileaks founder, Julian Assange.
