A PHOTOGRAPHER has described his close encounter with a UFO-like storm cloud at Mangrove Mountain this week as like a scene from hit movie Armageddon.
Andrew Cooney was driving to his girlfriend Ashlee’s house when he noticed the freak weather event unfolding just after 6pm on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old Coastie raced to “the clearest spot I could see” and sent up his drone to get a bird’s eye view of a “cumulonimbus cloud”, which is unusual for this time of year.
“It came right overhead and produced some amazing lightning,” Cooney said.
“It was one of the most amazing things I’ve seen … and definitely like something out of Armageddon or Twister.”
Two of his breathtaking photos have gone viral on the Express Advocate’s Facebook page, with nearly 500,000 views.
It was eerie,” Cooney, a professional snapper, said.
“There was no wind or signs of fierceness to the storm, until there were a few big lightning cracks and thunder.
“Rain soon followed and it all lasted about 20 minutes.”
A Bureau of Meteorology spokesman said this type of thundercloud was more common in the warmer summer months.
“(Cooney’s) striking images also contain shelf clouds, which are attached to the main cloud and give the UFO-like appearance,” he said.
