Prosthetic body parts have a long history. It is believed that the very first incident of a prosthetic limb was more than 5000 years ago when the ancient Indian warrior queen Vishpala went on to fight again after losing a leg by fitting herself with an iron substitute.

Since those days, the technology associated with prosthetic body parts has moved on a great deal with some people believing that the newest models are perhaps even superior to their flesh and blood counterparts. With that in mind, the world may be moving into the next stage of prosthetics with artists and designers such as Dani Clode moving prosthetics away from replacing lost body parts towards creating a new age of human body functionality.

Clode has recently debuted her invention which is referred to as the prosthetic ‘third thumb’. This ingenious invention which has been created with a strong, but highly flexible filament called NinjaFlex, is fitted with pressure sensors which can be worn in the shoes to allow the user to exert control over their prosthetic thumb. Clode says that the third thumb has a variety of applications from gripping baseballs, squeezing toothpaste, shaking hands or even reaching difficult chords of the guitar.

Clode explains that she wanted to use her smart invention to ‘challenge the perception of prosthetics. She said that through extending the body through inventions such as her own then prosthetics could begin to follow the same trajectory as both glasses and plastic surgery. She explains that once it becomes established that one can extend the body and give oneself greater physical abilities through the use of prosthetic body parts, then the conception of prosthetics is bound to become quite different. “When we reframe prosthetics as extensions, then we start to shift the focus from ‘fixing’ disability to extending ability, ” she explained.
