With China launching quantum communication satellite humanity is now on the edge of making a big jump in regards to communication technology. Quantum mechanics may now allow Earth to communicate with aliens.
The satellite was designed for testing how robust quantum entanglement is and it is going to probe high security data encryption along with being able to transfer data in a new way, via quantum information being encoded in light particle properties, photons.
Some believe that quantum communication via light may well be the answer to the ongoing search for signals from extra-terrestrial intelligence.
Processing Quantum Information In Nature
A recent article did suggest that quantum communication could be the best way in which to transfer information through the universe. It was said “light travelling in the deformed space-time close to the spinning black holes is constrained to encode and process quantum information pretty much like the information is manipulated in actual laboratory quantum computers.”
Photons follow the twisted and curved lines of space-time that is distorted and encode quantum information in sequences that are defined, much like computer code in programming. They escape the black hole influence eventually and the photons in beams of light have quantum codes that are simple, which may be interpreted and information accessed that they contain.
Quantum communication and quantum computation are both natural phenomenon that occur within the universe, so quantum communication with light may be thought of as being the proper way civilization exchanges information.
Listening For Extra-terrestrial Quantum Messages
It is already possible to detect the quantum information that is encoded in light as the technological capabilities are already in place. Private companies along with laboratories in universities around the globe have been testing out quantum technology in various ways. The equipment that is used in labs could analyze light that has been captured from outer space by telescopes and measure the information that is found in photon. Moving the telescope to point towards the correct direction out in space may improve the chances of being able to detect quantum signals.
While telescopes could be used to detect quantum information in astronomical light and help to decode it, special tools would be needed to properly identify any encoded messages.
A quantum computer would be needed to interpret the messages content. This would allow all of the quantum states of the photos to be put together to ensure they are in the correct order and this would give output that was intelligible, in other words, the correct message.
Efforts are continuing on a quantum computer that is functional and these are now in the final stages. The computer will be moved from the laboratory and it will then be implanted on an industrial level. It has been said that not too far into the future quantum computing is going to be just another part of the daily routine.
Quantum Key Is Another Crucial Ingredient
To try to attempt quantum communication with forms of life that are intelligent another crucial ingredient is needed, this is the quantum key. This would make sure that any communication is secure and provides the receiver with the tools needed to be able to assess the messages content. Without a quantum key it may be impossible to properly work out any quantum message that extra-terrestrials may be trying to communicate.
While the quantum key is absent right now this doesn’t mean that all is lost. When quantum information is first detected, encoded into photons by the extra-terrestrial, the sender will be alerted due to the fact that the first quantum measurement will act in much the same was as an alert button. The sender ETI would know straight away that there is another civilization that is technological superior.
So in theory, in order to be able to communicate with extra-terrestrials scientists have to measure the photon which has quantum information stored in it and Earth will be connected to a universal quantum internet.
