Research has been made on bringing together the use of magic mushrooms, and therapy and the results suggest that not only is it a safe and very effective way in which to treat depression and anxiety along with addiction, but it may be better than the types of treatment that exist.

Psychedelic Compound Psilocybin May Improve Psychiatric Disorders

The research reinforced the fact that exploration of the full impact of psilocybin is needed. This is a psychoactive component of the magic mushrooms that shows a great deal of promise for being able to improve the lives of people suffering from psychiatric disorders dramatically.

Psychedelics including psilocybin along with lysergic acid diethylamide, also known as LSD, are typically better known for being party drugs than they are therapeutic medication. However, they do share a similarity to neurotransmitters that include serotonin, and they have the ability to be able to affect perception along with altering the state of consciousness, which had made them candidates that are very attractive in the treatment of various psychiatric conditions.

Studies conducted in patients suffering from severe depression have been found to have improved following taking small amounts of psilocybin with therapy sessions. There has been some evidence that the brains of those involved in the studies have strengthened links over regions that had previously been disconnected. The results do need more attention as they have demonstrated huge potential for the use of serotonin agonists, which include psilocybin when it comes to blocking networks in the brain that are problematic. Therapy can also be used for the creation of more functional ones.

Studies Reveal Psilocybin Could Be Best Option For Many

Kelan Thomas from the University of California said that therapy used alongside Psilocybin for depressive disorders, anxiety, addiction and obsessive-compulsive disorder had been shown to be safe. He went on to say that when compared with different types of treatment the therapy with psilocybin had resulted in a larger effect, and this suggests that it may be a better option for many patients, and more so for people who did not respond to any other medication or procedure.

Researchers said that one of the benefits of using therapy assisted with psilocybin is that patients might require only a few sessions and then the effects persist for longer than other treatment. This does not mean that the drug is beneficial independently as a type of medication. At the moment research on the impact of psychoactive drugs is thin and there is no evidence that supports the use of psilocybin without using the support of therapy sessions. It is good enough reason, however, to make larger trials and use statistical tools that are more powerful, with the aim of getting the go-ahead from the US Food and Drug Administration.

Some Clinical Trials Lacked Statistical Analysis

Thomas said that the clinical trials that had been summarized during the Phase 2 studies looked into safety and efficacy endpoints, however, some of those studies had an open-label and they did lack statistical analysis. Phase 3 would go on to study the actual effectiveness of the drug and comparative value when used as a bona fide treatment, and it should help to bring it a step closer to becoming an option for trained and licensed psychiatrists to use it with their patients.

An advantage of psilocybin being tested rigorously is establishing evidence that has challenged many decades of negative association with what has been called illicit and harmful substances. Ecstasy has the active component MDMA, and the drug has been used in the dance club and fashion scene since the 80s. Studies have now shown that it can be effective when it comes to treating conditions that have been associated with just about everything from post-traumatic stress disorder to autism spectrum disorder. Just like psilocybin, there will be many years of testing and biases needed to overcome before the full potential of a type of medication will be seen.

The changing laws and attitudes towards the use of cannabis as a treatment that is valid may well open up the door for other psychoactive substance to be seen in a new light.
