The concept of the holographic universe was first suggested back in the 1990s. The basic theory is that all of the information available in this 3D universe is a holographic projection of a 2D surface.
Scientists find evidence that the universe is a hologram
The theory was proposed to rectify the apparent contradictions between Einstein’s theory of relativity and the behavior of particles on a sub-atomic level. Now, an international team of scientists from England, Italy, and Canada has come to a step closer to suggesting that this controversial hypothesis may be true.
Professor Kostas Skenderis of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom explains the concept of the holographic universe using a simple analogy. In ordinary holograms “a three-dimensional image is encoded in a two-dimensional surface, such as in the hologram on a credit card.” He goes on to say that the theory assumes that the entire universe is encoded in a very similar manner.
Iregularities in the cosmic microwave background
Professor Skenderis and his team used top of the range telescopes and sensor equipment to detect and attempt to interpret the vast amount of data hidden away in ‘white noise’ and microwaves which are remnants of the supreme blast of energy that was responsible for the creation of this universe. The team was able to discover some connections in this data with the theoretical assumptions that underpin quantum field theory. Effectively, their data found that the simplest of these theories was supported by the information they were able to discern about the nature of atomic activity in the era of the early universe.
Professor Skenderis said that the concept of the holographic universe was now perhaps the most probable explanation for the gulf between Einstein’s theory of relativity and major concepts underpinning quantum physics. He said that it was his hope that the research of his team would take physics another step closer to discovering the facts about the nature of this universe.
