Leaked intelligence report that supposedly proves Russia influenced the US election turns out to be a bust.

A US intelligence report which was claimed would prove that Russia influenced the American election to see the victory of their preferred candidate Donald Trump has left a lot of people scratching their heads. As it transpires, this scorching report which was supposed to indicate that the Russian news network Russia Today had been involved in the interference with American democracy did not refer at all to the president-elect and was in fact compiled in 2012, immediately after the re-election of President Barrack Obama.

The report primarily focuses on Russia Today’s reporting of current events and their decision to host a third party debate as their company was not permitted to participate in the main debates.

In Annex A of the report, intelligence agencies claim that “Kremlin’s TV Seeks To Influence Politics, Fuel Discontent in US.” Buried at the bottom of that page is a note stating, “This annex was originally published on 11 December 2012 by the Open Source Center, now the Open Source Enterprise.”

Reading the report, it has been difficult for most people to understand why the US government have targeted the news broadcaster in this manner. The report complains bitterly about a Russia Today documentary about Occupy Wall Street, reports about civil liberties infringements, police brutality and the use of drone planes. They also noted that Russia Today hosts had been known to compare the United States to Imperial Rome and claimed that corporate greed would lead to an American financial collapse. The report also complained that Russia Today had been reporting on fracking “highlighting environmental issues and the impacts on public health.”

In addition to the fact that this report was compiled and published four years prior to Donald Trump’s decision to enter the political arena, it is difficult to see how any of this reporting would directly benefit the president-elect. Donald Trump ran a campaign where he explicitly stated that he would rollback civil rights legislation, empower the police and ramp up aggression in the Middle East without fear of civilian casualties. He is also a climate change skeptic and is well known for his ostentatious displays of corporate greed and unethical business deals. If anything, Russia Today’s left-leaning slant on US news ought to have influenced voters against the president-elect.

With all that in mind, readers of the document have been left wondering why the government chose to release this apparently irrelevant report which certainly does not prove their claims that Russia influenced the recent presidential election.
