The House Armed Services Committee has voted this week to create a sixth branch of the American military which will be referred to as the US Space Corps which will be given the sole responsibility for military operations that will occur in space.
The United States Military officially creates a Space Corps
The newly created branch of the military will be given equal parity with the existing five branches of the US military, the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, the Marine Corps and the Coast Guard.
The creation of a sixth branch of the military is somewhat surprising as there have been no movements to create additional branches in the past few decades. The last branch of the military to be created in the United States was the Air Force back in 1947. However, according to representatives from the Pentagon, the need to create a dedicated Space Corps has been growing acuter, and House officials have been urged to take notice.
In the past few years, the Pentagon has been putting significant pressure on politicians to create a Space Corps and to grant the military central control additional funding to create the technology required to launch military operations in outer space. In the past couple of weeks, the Pentagon demonstrated renewed purpose in establishing a foundation for a Space Corps when they appointed a Deputy Chief of Staff to be in control of Space Operations in the US Air Force. It is believed that when the Space Corps comes into complete operation that it would be strongly linked to the Air Force.
The establishment of a Space Corps has come under some degree of criticism as no other nation is currently investing significant resources to waging war in outer space except for the United States. This means that the entire enterprise is viewed as redundant and a waste of money by many who cannot envisage an adversary that the United States will viably be fighting in a space context. However, there are clear signs that countries such as the Russian Federation are gearing up to develop a military space program of their own. Therefore, for military strategists, it makes complete sense to get a head start on the potentials of next generation warfare.
