Space X has managed to reach another big accomplishment as they have recovered the Falcon 9 rocket on their floating drone barge for the second time. This is huge as this happens to be the second time they have done it, recovered the same rocket using the same barge, when it made its landing last year after a resupply mission launch that was successful, which went to the International Space Station.
Space X Recycles Falcon 9 Rocket Thanks To Successful Landing Again
With Space X recovering the Falcon 9 it meant that they could recycle the rocket to use it again this time, and with successful recovery again, they could use it again, following stress testing along with evaluation.
Elon Musk said that the recovery had been an amazing day for space on the whole along with the industry as the orbit-class rocket was one component that is most expensive in spaceflight. He went on to say that it had taken 15 years to reach this point, with many difficult steps being taken along the way. He praised the team for reaching what he said was an incredible milestone.
Musk then went on to bring up a comparison he had made in the past between traditional rocket flight, which discards the booster following each launch, which he said is similar to discarding an entire plane following every flight it took. Doing so would be extremely costly and wouldn’t make sense. His point, of course, is to be able to reuse the rockets, which drastically cut down space travel cost. This is the whole premise of Space X as they go forward towards making humans an interplanetary species.
While Space X has indeed come a long way in changing space travel and making it more economical, the company intends to go even further, their aim is to be able to relaunch rockets in the same day they land, a huge feat on a totally different scale. However, it does seem that Musk and the team may be able to reach that goal, eventually.
