Mossmouth, the studio responsible for the highly-acclaimed platformer Spelunky, has announced a new project, comprising 50 games, called UFO 50.
The compilation aims to combine a distinctive 8-bit aesthetic with modern gameplay sensibilities across a variety of genres including brawlers, RPGs, action-adventures, and platformers. Despite the number of games included in the package, the developers stress that they are not “microgames or minigames,” but fully-fledged projects and that completing the entire collection could “easily take over a hundred hours.”
UFO 50‘s reveal trailer shows off a host of the games to be included in the collection, including some projects that appear to pay homage to Double Dragon, Golden Axe, The Legend of Zelda, and myriad other retro titles.
Although Mossmouth is billed as the creator, the studio’s Derek Yu has assembled an impressive team that also includes Downwell’s Ojiro Fumoto and The Indie Game Legend’s Paul Hubans, as well as frequent indie composer Eirik Suhrke. Each game is built around a single idea, with one of the team members acting as director, while the others have contributed art, programming, and design.
All of the fifty games will have a central single-player mode, while approximately a third will also have competitive or co-operative multiplayer modes. Although the projects are wildly diverse in terms of gameplay and visual style, Mossmouth says that the compilation is justified by narrative, with the conceit being that the games were all created by a revolutionary, though little-known, studio in the 1980s.
UFO 50 is currently targeting a PC release some time next year, with other platforms to follow at an unspecified date.
