Sceptic Chad Haines, who took the image, was left convinced aliens must exist after snapping the bizarre sight over Clarenville, in Canada.

He claimed it hovered before moving up and down and then shooting out of sight.

Mr Haines, who was previously a confirmed non believer, said it was not a plane and too big to have been a drone.

He said: “It was out there for two or three hours. I couldn’t believe it.”

The snap was revealed in a video by Tyler Glockner, who runs UFO channel SecureTeam10.

In the video Mr Glockner says: “Something’s caught flying in the skies over Canada.

“It looks like a saucer, it kind of looks like the Star Trek ship from the TV series.”

Mr Glockner said a UFO was spotted in the same place back in 1978.

The strange cigar-shaped craft hovering over Random Island was reported by a police officer.

But, another sceptic is not convinced anything extraterrestrial has been caught on camera in the latest image.

Scott Brando runs hoax-busting website ufoofinterest.org.

After being sent the image by Express.co.uk, he concluded it could just be a bird that had been back lit by sunlight.

He said: “The image is low quality and missing metadata to identify the alleged flying object. It could be a bird taken by backlight.”

He also tweeted: “What’s the strange flying object taken by a #Clarenville man over Random Island? A #UFO? A plane? Or a bird?”
