Anyone who has ever had constipation will know just how uncomfortable it is and will reel in horror when reading about one man in China who had 30 inches of constipated intestine removed by surgeons in China.
Man Had Been Severely Constipated For Many Years
Surgeons from China had to perform what is an uncommon procedure on a man so that they could take away 30 inches of large intestine following a condition that is rare which caused the man to have severe constipation and it kept building up over a period of many years.
The man has not been named, is 22 and it was said that he was born with a very rare condition that is called Hirschsprung disease. The unfortunate condition happens when there are missing nerves and it is these nerves that, in any normal individual, help to relax and squeeze the bowel when passing waste.
Waste Had Backed Up In The Intestine Causing Horrific Complications
This condition meant that all the waste was backed up in the intestine of the man and this lead to some horrific complications.
Doctors revealed that the man had been treated at the 10th Peoples Hospital of Shanghai and he had developed the symptoms at a very young age. It was said that the stomach of the man had swollen up so that he appeared to be heavily pregnant. He had been using laxatives along with other medication for constipation to force him to have bowel movements, but the team of expert surgeons, which were led by Dr. Yun Lu, should now have eased the pain and suffering of the young man.
Doctor Thought He Might Explode At Any Time
Dr. Lu said that he had been surprised by the sheer size of the abdomen of the patient and he said that it looked as though it might explode at just about any time. He went on to say that he had never thought about the possibility of a human abdomen being able to explode before he had seen the patient.
Reports suggested that the man had been in so much pain that he had plucked up the courage to seek out medical help. After an examination, the tests revealed that he had large amounts of feces which had become trapped in one section of the colon. He underwent surgery, which took three hours, to have 30 inches of intestine removed and then surgeons stitched it closed at both ends. After the operation the surgeons put the intestine they had removed onto the scales and to their astonishment found that it weighed two stone.
The condition is generally first diagnosed in babies or children after it causes them to have severe constipation that often leads to a bowel infection that is dangerous, with the name of enterocolitis if it has not been treated early. The patient is now said to be stable after his surgery and he must be feeling a lot better and lighter, it has been said that he will make a full recovery.
