It has recently been estimated that around 400 people lose their lives year after year due to their vehicle becoming submerged in a body of water as the result of an accident, reports Gordon Giesbrecht, a researcher from Canada. Many individuals that find themselves in this type of situation end up taking crucial incorrect actions when their car becomes completely covered and embodied in the water.

Below in the following video, expert diver Geoff Fahringer uses data he has collected from his research to instruct the viewers of the video on the correct thing to do by purposely submerging an aged vehicle down into an 8-foot canal filled with water with him inside! The same exact procedure will be done later on in the video as a few other people will join him in the submerged vehicle for instructing purposes. For the past 12 years, Fahringer has been a member of the Collier County Sheriff’s Department, dive rescue team in Naples, Florida.
When it gets down to the rubber meeting the road, there just isn’t enough time for rescue personnel to reach someone submerged in a vehicle at the bottom of a body of water to rescue them, you must have the knowledge and skills to be able to save yourself, states researcher Gordon Giesbrecht.
“People are being told that it is crucial to get out of the submerged vehicle they are in before the water rises to the level of the windows, and the time that typically happens is in the first 30 to 60 seconds from the car hitting the water” Giesbrecht states. Also “that also includes no time for reaching for your cell phone when this happens, don’t waste any time making any calls such as to 9-1-1.”
