Over the years it seems like the issue of birth control fell onto a woman. They are the ones who had to take the different types of pills or even use the devices that they had inserted as a form of contraceptive.
Contraceptive for Men Coming
Yes, men had a few methods such as have a surgical procedure known as a Vasectomy, problem with this one is if the man changes his mind later and decides he wants to have a child or more children it’s hard to reverse it. Than there is the ultimate form of protection known as the condom, this one doesn’t just prevent against having children but also protects against the spread of diseases such as AIDS. But even the condom isn’t full proof; there have been documented cases of condom failure which resulted in an unplanned pregnancy. Perhaps there is no such thing as a full proof contraceptive, well not yet but it could be on the horizon, and yes it’s for men.
A new drug is being tested known as Vasalgel is now being tested and so far the results of success have been almost at 100%. Vasalgel has currently had running test using Rhesus monkeys. These results came back showing almost a perfect success rating. But with any contraceptive, there will be side effects. So far the research done on Vasalgel has shown that the side effects but so far none have been shown in any of the monkeys injected with Vasalgel, Also, in the initial studies that were conducted on bunny rabbits in the lab if any adverse effects were found the second injection of a counter agent was used to flush out the contraceptive and was successful. However, so far this hasn’t been used on the monkeys since there seems no need, and there is also no proof that the same could be successful on men.
As for taking Vasalgel further to testing it on men, the nonprofit organization that is studying the drug known as The Parsemus Foundation, plan to partake of clinical trials as soon as they have acquired the funding to do so. One of the lead researchers of the project Catherine VandeVoort is quite optimistic about the future of Vasalgel and how safe it will be for human beings. She was quoted as saying recently about the study on monkeys and what this means:
“One of the great things about the monkey model is that the male reproductive tract is very similar to humans and they have even more sperm than humans do.” “Chances are, it’s going to be effective in humans.”
It’s still not yet been confirmed when Vasalgel will be tested on human beings. But, so far the research that has been done have much encouraged that the clinical study will take place in the very near future.
