Back in 1999 within a volcano in Argentina, the body of a young teenage girl frozen and preserved was found.
It was determined that this girl had to have been sacrificed by the Inca’s around 500 years ago. The oddest thing that scientist first discovered about the body was that it was preserved. There didn’t seem to be any signs of decay or rotting, the girl that was determined to be around fifteen years of age at the time of death look as if she had died hours ago not centuries ago.
the girl was fifteen years old
So, why would the Inca’s have sacrificed someone so young? Well, as disturbing as it may seem for some of us to accept it was common practice for the Inca tribe to sacrifice children to their gods. They didn’t think of it as killing the child but actually sending them to live with the gods as a way to appease their gods. This included throwing a child into an active volcano in order to appease the volcano god, which could be the case of the teenage girl. In most cases the sacrifices took place after the Inca’s would celebrate a major event, it was their way to honor their gods. The children were taken up a high mountain and then given a type of drink that would intoxicate or even drug them. After the child is out of it thanks to the drink they are either strangled or given a severe fatal blow to the head. Sometimes the child would be abandoned on top the mountain to freeze to death.
As for the young girl, how was it determined that her corpse was five centuries old? Scientists who have been studying her body determined it by samples from her hair. They also determined that the girl could have had a viral infection at the time of death similar to that of Tuberculosis. Why is this significant? Because the scientific group thinks that through her body they might be able to come up with ways to help combat bacterial diseases that currently plague mankind. Which could be a significant discovery given the fact that antibiotics could be becoming obsolete with new super strains of bacteria that these once effective drugs aren’t able to combat.
So, how is it possible that this girl’s body is preserved? That is another question altogether, there are very few documented cases of a body dead for years actually being found preserved. One is that of the girl who was known as Bernadette Soubirous or as she is known in the Catholic faith, St. Bernadette of Lourdes, she died in 1879, but when her body was exhumed for research purposes in 1909 there were zero signs of decay. Another eerie connection between these two women Bernadette Soubirous died at a young age due to complications from Tuberculosis. As for the young Inca girl, if there was those who doubt that she is carefully preserved there is a video out there online. This video goes into grave detail as to what was found when her body was exhumed and examined, it is quite interesting to watch.
