During the 20th century, one of the most revolutionary concept was learned, and this was that time is not a universal measurement. Lives may be ruled by seconds, minutes, hours, the days and the week but it does not matter where a person lives in the world, and time is never going to be absolute. The rate at which time passes is always going to be dependent on the acceleration and speed of a given moment. But just how can time be slower and faster at the same time?
The answer may be complex, but MinutePhysics have made a video that explains this, and it lasts under three minutes. In the video, they explain that the rate in which time passes is actually slowing down the more the person is moving.
This isn’t talking about a person’s perception of time. Recent research into this revealed that perception of time is speeding up thanks to the numerous technologies that exist in the lives of people today. It is talking about actual time rate, which has been seen in many experiments to slow down when photons and muons have been sped up.
The theory of relativity according to Einstein talked about the different of time that had elapsed since two events, measured by those observing that are moving about each other or differently, dependent on the proximity to gravitational mass. This says that the faster the person goes, the more time is affected. However, if time is just as relative as this might suggest, then it is contradictory.
MinutePhysics pointed said to imagine if there were two of us and both were zooming through space but both heading in totally different directions, but then both pass each other. They went on to say that from my perspective it would seem as though you were moving and time would go slowly for you, however from your perspective it would seem as though I was the one moving and it would go slowly for me.
But how can both people think that time is moving more slowly for the other than for themselves? Surely the time of someone is actually moving slower?
Well, it isn’t that simple, and MinutePhysics provides an explanation that has to do with how the direction of time is rotated when one changes speed. To get a full and easy explanation take a look at the video and at the end of it, there is a brain teaser that is really going to raise some eyebrows.
