The latest Forbes rich list has revealed a record number of billionaires with the global figure now sitting at 2043.
Forbes rich list publication sees global Billionaire assets rise to $7.67 trillion
The richest man in the world for a fourth consecutive year, despite having taken a back seat in many of his ventures to concentrate on more philanthropic causes is Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft. Gates’ current worth is $86 billion.
Second on the list was Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett, who until relatively recently was nowhere near as well known as other on the list. Buffet’s portfolio is mainly on of investing and acquisitions, and he is known for his personal frugality despite his massive wealth. Buffet’s worth today is $72.8 billion.
Rounding out the top three is Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who has seen the company once operating our of his garage form into one of the largest in the world. Bezos, who is rapidly catching the top two, is worth $72.8 billion.
The reason for the record billionaire haul this year is mainly due to boom oil prices and the stock market recovering much quicker than expected from the recent crashes. The overall value of the wealth represented by those on the rich list now exceeds $7.67 trillion.
In other words, the rich are getting richer, at a time when there is unprecedented turmoil in the world. From civil wars and genocides throughout several regions to the election promises of Donald Trump including the Mexican border wall, the escalating standoff with North Korea and Russia’s alleged subversive involvement in everything. Coincidence?
Oddly one of the few billionaires to lose money last years was U.S President Donald Trump, who has seen his place in the list fall from 324th to 544th. Likely a result of his having to relinquish ownership of certain of his business assets that represented a conflict of interest with becoming president and the fact that his trump tower complex hasn’t been performing as well as in the past.
Fortunately for anyone worrying about Trump, whose fortune is now down to only a paltry $3.5 billion, his time as president will likely allow him plenty of time to set up numerous lucrative deals and relationships to rebuilt and better his previous standing in the list.
The richest country on the list regarding billionaires is once again the United States with 565, with China gaining rapidly with 319 and Germany in third place with 114.
