Physicists have been struggling for decades with the task of bridging the apparent contradictions between the Standard Model of Physics, which comprises the known and observable laws of this universe, and the way that particles change their behavior on the subatomic level.
Now a team or researchers from the South Korean government backed laboratory the Institute of Basic Science have made a breakthrough which might go some way to grasping the answer to this vitally important conundrum.
Dark portals might explain the most enduring mystery of physics
Scientists have become aware of the presence of what is referred to as the dark matter in the universe. While it is completely undetectable by conventional instruments, researchers have been able to measure the interactions of this invisible matter through its effects on phenomenon such as gravitational waves and gravitational lensing.
In order to explain dark matter, a number of theories have been put forward in the past such as the existence of axions or dark photons which could theoretically be the agents by which the dark dimension interacts with particles within the known universe. However, the existence of these photons and axions has never been proved, and the mechanism by which they could interact with particles in the known universe has never been adequately explained by any existing model.
The South Korean team have suggested that there could be a fairly simple way that the two dimensions interact with each other – via ‘dark axion portals’. According to Lee Hye-Sung, one should understand the dark axion portal as an interaction point where the two separate models of physics join together and interact. Lee Hye-Sung writes; “The dark axion portal suggests the first meaningful connection between the two physics, which have been studied separately: It connects the dots. This will allow a reinterpretation of the previous data, and potentially make a breakthrough in the axion and dark photon searches.”
It will take a considerable amount of further analysis and rigorous investigation before this theoretical assumption can be confirmed by the scientific community. However, if it is proven to be true, then scientists will be one huge step closer to understanding the bridge between the apparent contradictions in the leading models of physics.
